Robot creates its own music

This robot uses deep learning to write and play its own music. The robot was trained on more than 5,000 songs and two million motifs, riffs and licks.Using deep learning, the robot can now study large datasets from well-known musicians, and then produce and perform its own original compositions. Shimon was originally developed by Gil Weinberg, director of Georgia Tech’s Center for Music Technology.

Initially scientists developed an artificial intelligence robot that can create its own music inspired by the works of musicians like Beethoven and Lady Gaga. The robot with four arms and eight sticks writes and plays its own compositions on a marimba, using a database of well known pop, classical and jazz artists.

The researchers used artificial intelligence to turn ‘Shimon’ into an autonomous music-making machine. Using deep learning, the bot studied a database of nearly 5,000 pre-existing songs, including compositions by Beethoven, the Beatles, Miles Davis, and Lady Gaga.

It creates its own music from the extensive database it’s been given. It produces meaningful music without human intervention.
